What are your thoughts on 30-40 year old amalgam dental fillings that are in very good condition (not cracked or leaching). I eat a mostly organic, real food diet with plenty of fermented foods. I truly believe in the power of gut health and after dealing with gut dysbiosis over a decade ago, have never been healthier. (Should go without saying that I didn’t poison myself during the convid era.) I have lots of old dentistry from childhood and have almost been swayed several times to have my 6 teeth with amalgam and/or root canals removed. But I’m already missing 5 other teeth and am not even 50, so dentures are out of the question! I’ve come to the conclusion that if the amalgam is in tact, it’s safer to leave it alone. I’d absolutely love to hear your thoughts. Many thanks, Reneé
Reneé — you're right to be cautious. Removing amalgam is more dangerous than keeping it if it's not cracked or leaching, because the drilling process releases mercury vapour — exactly what you're trying to avoid.
That said, I had a dozen fillings done in the 80s and I got all of mine out 2015. Felt much better for it (slept better). I also had a root canal that cracked — root canals are bad news because the dead tooth harbours bacteria that your immune system can never reach. That was one of the best things I ever got rid of. Had the lot replaced with white composite by a Thai dentist for about £400. In the UK that would have cost thousands. So it depends on your situation — 6 fillings is a lot of mercury sitting in your mouth, especially if you're already health-conscious and doing everything else right.
The things that accelerate amalgam breakdown are grinding, hot drinks directly on the filling, and EMF. Mercury is a conductor — it responds to electromagnetic fields. If you're sleeping near EMR, your fillings are getting stimulated every night. I wrote about the conductivity issue with dental metals here: https://normanjamesemf.substack.com/p/titanium-implants-conductive-electric
If you do decide to get them out, find a biological dentist who follows the SMART protocol — rubber dam, external air supply, high-volume suction, charcoal protocol before and after. Never let a regular dentist drill them out. And juice cilantro if you do it — cilantro is a natural mercury chelator and supports your body in pulling the metals out.
One thing worth adding to your protocol — Lactobacillus salivarius. I have a Japanese yogurt powder bacteria containing it. It's one of the key strains for oral health, reduces pathogenic bacteria in the mouth, and supports the oral microbiome that protects your teeth and gums.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful and very informative answer. I did actually look into having them removed a few years ago via the SMART technique with a holistic Dentist. It was going to be around £600 per tooth, which is obviously extortionate compared to what you paid in Thailand. But the thing that put me off was she said she couldn’t guarantee that my teeth wouldn’t be completely trashed afterwards. The dentistry is so old and they were drilled so deeply to fill them completely with mercury and she couldn’t guarantee the safety of them. That’s ultimately what put me off.
Thanks also for your recommendation - I’m going to order some of that strain of probiotic and make some yoghurt with it because every little helps as they say.
I’m really really loving your Substack! thanks again. Reneé
Too technical, not layman friendly.

Your diet sounds like it's already doing the heavy lifting.

You might want to go on holiday and get them done. It will be the same price.
Don’t tempt me 🤣
